Heishi, comes from the Santo Domingo word meaning “shell,” traditionally referred to as necklace shell beads. Today it can describes tiny, handmade beads of any material. The Santo Domingo Pueblo carvers are the most skilled heishi makers. To make these very tiny beads, the shell is sliced into strips, and then cut into small squares.  Holes are then drilled through the center. (Traditionally, the holes were pierced with cactus spear.)  The shells are then  strung together, the rough squares are shaped and smoothed by holding the string against a turning stone wheel. It really is quite interesting.

Fittingly, our Light Blue Heishi Bracelet comes with a Sterling Silver Seashell charm.  These Heishi shell beads are sourced through Santo Domingo.  They are very smooth and this strand does have a good deal of shading. It’s the perfect Beach Girl accessory, and I should know! I think you will love it too!

This beautiful bracelet is about 7" wide and its shell pieces are 3-4mm. It also comes with a lovely, sterling silver, round Seashell charm.  (This is where the creative side of me shines, I just love finding the perfect charm to complete my vision for a piece. It's as if things are just falling together so nicely.)  We will have this bracelet in other colors, in the coming weeks and perhaps also in necklaces.  I will take a poll and we will see what happens!  So don’t forget to check out our stories, so you can vote.  You may also DM me, and we can discuss making a special ooak piece just for you!

(Please note that our wrap bracelets have stretch, however they should not be pulled to the extreme. I recommend that you roll them on to your wrist to ensure they last for many, many years. Please remember that no two stones are alike, you will see variations from bracelet to bracelet, as this happens with all natural shells. Their beauty lies within their differences. Authentic Heishi shells do not lay flat, that’s why it was hard to get a photo.  We are using a darker background to show the true color of the lighter beads.  Please reach out to us if you would like other photos.)
