This lovely color is on our 2 ply 100% Organic Merino, Sock Weight Base. There are approximately 350 yards of gorgeous yarn per skein. We suggest using a US 2 - 4.5 Knitting Needle and a size C/E Crochet Hook.
As with all naturally hand dyed yarns, we recommend hand washing your finished piece, using a PH Balanced Soap, such as Mrs. Myer’s Clean Day Lavender Laundry.
After trying so hard to dye the perfect light pink, we believe we have finally done it! That is the reason why we have chosen to name this yarn, Pink Dolphins. Pink Dolphins are truly unique mammals. Often referred to as the Amazon River Dolphin, they are both social and friendly creatures. They mainly are found in South America, particularly in the Amazon River, as they can not survive in salt water. Unlike other dolphins, they do not have dorsal fins, but rather they have a large hump, which gets larger with age. The Pink Dolphins normal life span is only 33 months, however when they are kept in captivity, they have been known to live between ten to thirty years.
The Amazon River dolphins are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to the impacts of human life on Earth, “including entanglement, habitat fragmentation, infrastructure development and hydrocarbon exploration.” When we looked further for information on the International Union for Conservation of Nature, we found that they are the “global authority on the status of the natural world and of the measures needed to protect it.” They were founded in October 1948 in Fontainebleau, France. The IUCN is funded by both governments and private corporations. The IUCN “is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. They continue to champion Nature-based Solutions, as key to the implementation of International Agreements, such as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals.”
While we believe that the IUCN is indeed doing invaluable work, we believe that it would be a better choice for Sand Castles & Sea Shells Yarn Shoppe, if we donated 5% of the profits of our Pink Dolphin color way, to Ocean Conservancy, just as we are with our Glacial Blue color way. We believe that our donation would do more for Ocean Conservancy, as their mission aligns closer with our small company, and we would have better accountability of where our funds are actually going, and also of the commendable work that they are supporting. (Please read the description of our Glacial Blue color way, if you would like to know why we have chosen to support Ocean Conservancy.) We have done extensive research on these companies, as it is extremely important to us that you also are comfortable with where your hard earned money is being donated.
