Apple Green Chalcedony (Chrysoprase) Gemstone on Sterling Silver French Hook Earrings (Pear Briolette Cut)

Our lovely, Apple Green Chalcedony Gemstones set on Sterling Silver French Hooks, are the perfect summer statement. They will pair very nicely with many of our Sea Glass Pendants. It's the rarest type of chalcedony, but not well known. (Chalcedony does not have a universally recognized grading system, as it's less about a standardized assessment and more about the unique characteristics of each stone.) 

This unusual Pear Briolette cut was designed by Lodewyk van Bercken, a Belgian Jeweler, in 1476. This cut requires a more advanced technique than round cuts, making Gemstones cut in a Pear Briolette style, very rare and quite expensive. This particular cut is mostly used for stones with color, such as Sapphires, Chalcedony and some varieties of Quartz. This style of cutting was made popular during the Victorian Era and has remained so today. 

The striking green hue of Apple Green Chalcedony comes from trace amounts of other minerals. Nickel, in particular, can give Chalcedony a range of green colors, from light apple greens to darker forest tones. It’s these captivating hues that make Green Chalcedony a beloved gemstone across the world. Green Chalcedony is one well traveled gemstone. It occurs worldwide, cropping up in very diverse geological settings. Each location imparts its own distinct characteristics. Some of the finest Green Chalcedony is sourced from Brazil, known for its saturated and very even colors. Specific conditions in each region, from mineral content to temperature, can subtly affect the properties of Green Chalcedony. On the Mohs scale of hardness, Apple Green Chalcedony comes in at 6-7, putting it in line with Gemstones such as Quartz. It translates into a very wearable stone, that can stand up to everyday use. Chrysoprase, is a green variety of Chalcedony, ranging from a milky yellow-green to deep green, but most often it is apple green.
